Since you\u2019ll likely discover a lot of keywords this way, it\u2019s a good idea to learn how to choose the best ones for your website\u2014and we\u2019ve got a full <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/how-to-choose-keywords-for-seo\/\">guide<\/a> on\u00a0that.<\/p>\n<h3>How you WILL NOT find a website\u2019s keywords<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re curious, here\u2019s why you need a premium SEO\u00a0tool.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An old method for finding keywords was to view a page\u2019s HTML code and look at these two parts of the\u00a0code:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><code>&lt;meta name=\u201dkeywords\u201d&gt;<\/code><\/strong> \u2013<strong> <\/strong>This is where SEOs used to put their keywords back in the day to tell Google what the page is about (and hopefully rank for those terms). Hardly anybody uses that now, so you won\u2019t find much information there.<\/li>\n<li><strong><code>&lt;title&gt;<\/code> <\/strong>\u2013<strong> <\/strong>This determines the title of the page. This can be a hint as to what the page\u2019s target keyword is <em>as intended <\/em>by the page\u2019s creator. This means that a) the page may not rank for the keyword in the first 100 SERP results and b) you can see only one organic keyword (without any SEO data) one page at a\u00a0time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another method is to use <a href=\"https:\/\/ads.google.com\/home\/tools\/keyword-planner\/\">Google Keyword Planner<\/a>. This solution is better but still not accurate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>GKP will show you a mix of keyword ideas based on a page\u2019s URL, where you will\u00a0find:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Some organic keywords that the page ranks for<\/strong>, but you won\u2019t know which. And you will likely get overestimated search volumes for whole groups of keywords instead of just one (learn more in our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/gsc-gkp-search-volume-study\/\">study<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Topically relevant keywords<\/strong> that Google suggests you could run ads for.
