Find keywords with traffic potential<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>There\u2019s no point in targeting keywords that nobody types into Google because they won\u2019t send you traffic even if you rank #1. So the first step is to find keywords that potential customers are searching for.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at a couple of ways to do\u00a0this.<\/p>\n<h3>A. See which of your competitors\u2019 pages get the most traffic<\/h3>\n<p>If your competitor gets a lot of organic traffic to a page, the keyword it\u2019s targeting must have traffic potential. And because they\u2019re a competitor, such keywords are probably ones your customers are searching for\u00a0too.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to find which of your competitors\u2019 pages get the most search traffic:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Enter a competitor\u2019s domain<\/li>\n<li>Go to the<strong> Top pages<\/strong> report<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For example, if you are looking for keywords for an online computer parts store, you may enter <em>newegg.com<\/em>. In the report, you\u2019ll see its top pages by estimated organic traffic and the keyword sending the most traffic to each\u00a0page.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><noscript><img Use a keyword research tool<\/h3>\n<p>Keyword research tools are big keyword databases that you can search and filter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to use our keyword tool to find keywords with traffic potential:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Enter a few broad keywords related to your site (these are known as your \u201cseeds\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the <strong>Matching terms<\/strong> report<\/li>\n<li>Filter for keywords with Traffic Potential (TP)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For example, for a computer parts store, you can enter seed keywords like <em>pc<\/em>, <em>computer<\/em>, <em>computers<\/em>, <em>motherboard<\/em>, <em>motherboards<\/em>, <em>amd,<\/em> and <em>intel<\/em>. Check their value for your business<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Each keyword your potential customers are searching for has some value for your business. But some have more value than others.<\/p>\n<p>Take these three keywords, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>graphics card\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 Searchers are shopping around. They\u2019re nowhere near ready to\u00a0buy.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>b550 vs x570 motherboard\u201d <\/strong>\u2013<strong> <\/strong>Searchers have done some shopping around and narrowed down their options. They\u2019re almost ready to\u00a0buy.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>amd ryzen 5 3600\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 Searchers have decided what they want. They\u2019re ready to\u00a0buy.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Given that some of these searchers are closer to buying a computer part than others, some keywords arguably have more \u201cbusiness potential\u201d for a computer parts store. It depends on how valuable it is for <em>your<\/em> business. Check ranking difficulty<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Keywords vary in ranking difficulty for a number of reasons. This doesn\u2019t mean you should avoid those that are harder to rank for than others, but it\u2019s important to take ranking difficulty into account when building your keyword strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Here are four things we recommend you look at to assess ranking difficulty:<\/p>\n<h3>Backlinks<\/h3>\n<p>Backlinks are one of Google\u2019s top ranking factors. The more high-quality backlinks the current top-ranking pages have, the harder it\u2019ll be to compete with\u00a0them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For a rough idea of how many backlinks you\u2019ll need to crack the top 10, check the Keyword Difficulty (KD) score in Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/keywords-explorer\">Keywords Explorer<\/a>.
