It was first <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Purchase_funnel\">developed in 1898<\/a> by E. St. Elmo Lewis, an advertising advocate.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Awareness<\/strong> \u2013 When a prospect becomes aware of your brand, product, or service.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interest<\/strong> \u2013 When the prospect expresses interest in your product or service.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Desire<\/strong> \u2013 When the prospect evaluates your product or service. Repeat customers that advocate for your brand are important too. Awareness<\/h3>\n<p>The Awareness stage is when potential customers first learn about your\u00a0brand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This can happen in a variety of\u00a0ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They see one of your ads on Instagram.<\/li>\n<li>They search for something on Google and find your website or content.<\/li>\n<li>They watch one of your videos on YouTube.<\/li>\n<li>They chance upon your TikTok.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whichever it is, they now know you exist. The next time they see your brand again, they\u2019ll remember you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>2. Interest<\/h3>\n<p>The Interest stage is when potential customers begin to express interest in your\u00a0brand:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They realize they have a problem, and you have a possible solution.<\/li>\n<li>They simply want to learn more about your brand and what you\u00a0do.<\/li>\n<li>Your content intrigues and\/or entertains them, and they want more of\u00a0it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Typically, they\u2019ll indicate this interest by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Following you on social media (Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and\/or TikTok).<\/li>\n<li>Signing up for your email\u00a0list.<\/li>\n<li>Following your podcast on their favorite platform (Spotify, Apple Podcasts, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Subscribing to your YouTube channel.<\/li>\n<li>Registering for a webinar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They can do one or all of these actions. The more of these actions they do, the more interested they are in your\u00a0brand.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Desire\/Consideration<\/h3>\n<p>The Desire stage\u2014or more commonly known today as Consideration\u2014is when the prospect begins to evaluate your product or service.<\/p>\n<p>Just because they know what you do and how you can help them doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re their final choice. They will evaluate alternatives, read reviews, talk to friends and family, and compare.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Action<\/h3>\n<p>The Action stage is the most straightforward. You are the chosen one. When it comes to buying things, people don\u2019t follow the funnel so linearly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just think about your own behavior. Do you really progress through these stages in such a straightforward way? Likely not.<\/p>\n<p>Some people go straight to the Action stage<strong> <\/strong>if there is a catalyst event.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/embed\/feed\/update\/urn:li:share:7018936934165008385\" height=\"835\" width=\"504\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" title=\"Embedded post\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Some people bounce around stages for a few months (or even years) before they hit the Action stage. Some people bounce around the stages and never progress any further. The list goes\u00a0on.<\/p>\n<p>So the way to use the marketing funnel <em>in reality <\/em>is to use it as a mental model to tweak your marketing. In short, you\u2019ll want to make sure you\u2019re doing some marketing activities or creating content for each stage, so you\u2019re targeting different people at different parts of the buyer\u2019s journey.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not, fill in the\u00a0gaps.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Awareness<\/h3>\n<p>Your goal at this stage is to \u201copen up the funnel,\u201d i.e., introduce your brand to as many relevant people as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tactics to do\u00a0that:<\/p>\n<h4>Implement a search-focused content marketing strategy<\/h4>\n<p>Your prospects are almost certainly searching for information related to your brand on Google. Naturally, we\u2019ll create content around SEO-related topics. Interest<\/h3>\n<p>At this stage, your goal is twofold:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You want to get them to sign up for your email\u00a0list.<\/li>\n<li>You want to retain this interest and nurture them to the next\u00a0stage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most obvious step here is to continue to create content that engages your prospects. No matter whether it\u2019s your TikTok account or a YouTube channel, your content is likely the reason why they followed you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So that\u2019s how you\u2019ll keep their interest. Beyond that, here\u2019s what you can\u00a0do:<\/p>\n<h4>Get them to sign up for your email\u00a0list<\/h4>\n<p>A prospect can indicate their interest in your brand in various ways. But they\u2019re not made equal. It\u2019s explicit permission from the prospect into their inbox, a sacred space where they conduct their most important work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll want to make sure as many of them are signing up for your email list. Put up call to actions that remind them to subscribe. So now you want to help others prevent that\u00a0issue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Answer common questions or objections <\/strong>\u2013 For example, how much your shoes cost, what material they\u2019re made of, whether they\u2019re cruelty-free\/vegan\/sustainable, and so on.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The choice is\u00a0yours.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Consideration<\/h3>\n<p>In this stage, your goal is to convince them you\u2019re the right product for the\u00a0job.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tactics to consider:<\/p>\n<h4>Get more reviews<\/h4>\n<p>There are likely plenty of review-type platforms in your niche. More reviews\u2014especially high ratings\u2014can be influential in a prospect\u2019s decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no way around it, though: The best way to get more high-quality reviews is to deliver an amazing experience for your existing customers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, even highly satisfied customers may not remember to leave reviews, so you\u2019ll also want to ask for one when the opportunity arises. This can be when they express satisfaction (online or offline) or when they\u2019ve used\/experienced your product or service (e.g., travel websites like Airbnb and TripAdvisor tend to ask for reviews when you\u2019ve finished your stay or\u00a0tour).<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you\u2019ll want to respond to these reviews. It\u2019s the opposite, in fact. But touching or using the product will imprint it on your prospect\u2019s mind. That\u2019s why food companies are more than happy to offer free samples\u2014one taste and you\u2019ll know whether you want to buy it or\u00a0not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At Ahrefs, we offer free versions of our toolset:<\/p>\n<p>When potential customers consume our content and are able to follow along with our free tools, we\u2019ll be top of mind when they decide to sign up in the future.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Action<\/h3>\n<p>Some people in this stage may need just a little bit more encouragement to purchase. So your goal here is to give them the final \u201cnudge\u201d\u2014a compelling reason to buy right\u00a0now.<\/p>\n<p>There are various ways you can do this, such\u00a0as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Utilizing urgency. If your cohort-based course is closing or a product is going out of stock soon, you can gently remind them (don\u2019t fake\u00a0this!).<\/li>\n<li>Offering a money-back guarantee.<\/li>\n<li>Making sure the checkout experience is smooth and\u00a0easy.<\/li>\n<li>Offering them a final discount or coupon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"recommendation\">\n<p>Recommendation<\/p>\n<div class=\"recommendation-content\">This stage is also a good place to add upsells. Upselling is selling your customers add-ons to the products they\u2019re already buying.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when you purchase a MacBook from the Apple Store, they\u2019ll ask you if you want AppleCare. That\u2019s an upsell. Likewise, when you buy a meal at McDonald\u2019s and they ask if you want to upsize your\u00a0meal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As you build your funnel, you should assign some metrics to each stage. The <strong>exact <\/strong>metric will vary depending on the channel or tactic you\u2019re using, but here are some\u00a0ideas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Awareness<\/strong> \u2013 Number of visitors coming to the\u00a0site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interest<\/strong> \u2013 Number of people signing up for the email\u00a0list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consideration<\/strong> \u2013 Click-through rate (CTR) for the email(s).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conversion<\/strong> \u2013 Number of people purchasing your product or service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Start measuring them with tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.google.com\/\">Google Analytics<\/a>. Compare these metrics month-on-month. If you notice a decline or contrast in numbers, it means you have a problem.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you may notice a lot of traffic on your website, but no one is converting to your email list. From there, you\u2019ll know there may be an issue with the Interest stage. You can\u00a0experiment with tactics to improve the conversion, such\u00a0as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Retargeting visitors with an offer to join your\u00a0list.<\/li>\n<li>Improve your email sign-up copy.<\/li>\n<li>Improve the incentive you\u2019re offering to sign\u00a0up.<\/li>\n<li>Make the sign-up box more prominent.<\/li>\n<li>Adding more options to sign\u00a0up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Analyzing and improving your funnel is a never-ending process. But that\u2019s the fun part of marketing. Keep on experimenting and you\u2019ll find ways to improve your results.<\/p>\n<h2>Final thoughts<\/h2>\n<p>According to conventional marketing wisdom, it\u2019s cheaper to retain customers than to acquire new ones.
