So why should anyone choose you over the\u00a0rest?<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t tell them why, they won\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why your positioning should make it crystal clear to potential customers what your product or service is, why it\u2019s different, and why it matters to\u00a0them.<\/p>\n<p>How do you create your positioning statement? The best way is to follow <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aprildunford\">April Dunford\u2019s<\/a> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Obviously-Awesome-Product-Positioning-Customers\/dp\/1999023005\">Obviously Awesome<\/a>\u201d framework. I highly recommend buying the book, but here\u2019s a quick summary:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Understand who your best customers are<\/li>\n<li>Form a positioning team and align your positioning vocabulary across teams\/departments<\/li>\n<li>List your competitive alternatives<\/li>\n<li>Figure out the attributes and features that make your product\/service unique<\/li>\n<li>Figure out the true value of these attributes and features\u2014what do they do for your customers?<\/li>\n<li>Find a target market that makes your value obvious to the customer segments that care most about your unique value proposition<\/li>\n<li>Capture your positioning in an evergreen document that can be shared across all\u00a0teams<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You may have a significant following on social media, but:<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to developing an audience, there\u2019s no better way than to build an email list. It may be a relic on the internet timeline, but it\u2019s reliable\u2014with an email list, you own the contact details and can communicate with your audience anytime.<\/p>\n<p>To build an email list, you must convince website visitors to subscribe. Attend local events in your\u00a0niche<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sometimes, all it takes is to show up at events where your customers are hanging out. That way, you can meet them in person, build up a relationship, and they may eventually become your customers.<\/p>\n<p>Especially if you\u2019re a local business, tight-knit and small local meetups are great places to meet prospective customers. If you have the budget, you can even sponsor the event by providing light bites or drinks.<\/p>\n<p>Even better: volunteer to speak at the event. Practice good \u201creply game\u201d<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Many people think social media is about posting as much as possible. But nothing can be further from the\u00a0truth.<\/p>\n<p>After all, if you don\u2019t have an existing audience, you\u2019re publishing to crickets. So to kickstart your social media growth, you have to practice good reply\u00a0game.<\/p>\n<p>How do you do that? I <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/b2b-content-marketing\/\">asked<\/a> marketing consultant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dfallarme\/\">David Fallarme<\/a>, and here\u2019s what he\u00a0said:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>For most people going from zero to one on LinkedIn, the way to get engagement on your content is to give engagement to other content first.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Your first job: to find and add people who are relevant to you and your target audience. Add a few influencers in your niche, then use the \u201cPeople also viewed\u201d function to see who else LinkedIn suggests. These are typically people who post regularly, which means you\u2019ll be exposed to a lot of content in your\u00a0niche.<\/p>\n<p>After following ~10\u201315 influencers, you should build your LinkedIn writing muscle by commenting on their posts whenever you log on. This does a couple of things: First, it trains your brain that posting on LinkedIn is nothing to be scared of. Two, it gives you new ideas for your own content\u2014every comment you leave is the seed for future posts. Third, when you leave thoughtful comments, and when you reply to others who have left comments, others who also follow that person will visit your profile and respond to your connection requests.<\/p>\n<p>All of these increase the chances that when you post something on LinkedIn, it\u2019s relevant to your target audience and you\u2019re not just yelling into the void. You always have new connections who are exposed to your content.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"sidenote\">\n<p>Sidenote.<\/p>\n<p> He was specifically talking about LinkedIn, but his tips can be applied across all platforms.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, don\u2019t comment for the sake of commenting. The worst thing you can do is become a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/social-media-definitions\/reply-guy\/\">reply guy<\/a>.\u201d You\u2019d want to genuinely participate in the conversation. Add on to their post, give them something new to think about, or challenge their opinion in a friendly way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There is an art to replying and commenting, and probably like 60-70% of people I\u2019ve seen on the internet fail at it.
