That\u2019s where multi-channel marketing comes\u00a0in.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to maximize sales and minimize marketing costs, a multi-channel approach can help you capture customers you may otherwise never\u00a0reach.<\/p>\n<p>But what is multi-channel marketing, really? And how do you do that while staying organized? This can mean using a combination of SEO, social media marketing, paid advertising, and any number of other marketing channels.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The benefits of multi-channel marketing<\/h3>\n<p>As I alluded to above, multi-channel marketing allows you to reach more customers than a single-channel focus ever can. To illustrate, some people will never search for the keywords you rank for on Google, and some people just don\u2019t use social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a broader reach, you may be able to capture new customers for a lower\u00a0cost.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Case in point: Organic social media is free, and spreading your advertising over a mix of both social channels and paid search engine marketing means you\u2019ll find the most effective use of your ad spend. Establish consistency using\u00a0IMC<\/h3>\n<p>If you aren\u2019t careful, utilizing multiple channels and hiring people to manage those channels can quickly lead to inconsistent messaging and branding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/imc\/\">integrated marketing communications (IMC)<\/a> comes\u00a0in.<\/p>\n<p>Strong IMC makes your brand consistent across all the interaction points with customers, from initial awareness of your brand to making a purchase. It includes things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brand styling, color, and font guidelines.<\/li>\n<li>Messaging personality and style (i.e., how your brand writes).<\/li>\n<li>Approved logo styles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In other words, you should take the time to create branding and style guidelines for your company. What are your primary colors? How should your logo always appear? Of course, you can go deeper than that to include your brand\u2019s personality (i.e., how you want your copywriting to come across\u2014witty, funny, silly, serious, or something else).<\/p>\n<p>If you want to learn more about developing brand style guidelines, I highly recommend reading <a href=\"https:\/\/venngage.com\/blog\/brand-style-guide\/\">Venngage\u2019s guide here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Identify and research your target audience<\/h3>\n<p>One of the most important things you can do to market your company is to understand the audience you\u2019re marketing to. Things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do they care\u00a0about?<\/li>\n<li>What problems do they have that your company can\u00a0solve?<\/li>\n<li>Where do they go to find information about your products?<\/li>\n<li>Etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/market-research\/\">Conducting market research<\/a> should be a priority. It starts with determining the questions you want to answer. I gave you a few ideas above, but feel free to come up with more of your\u00a0own.<\/p>\n<p>Once you know what you\u2019re looking for, you need to choose a research method. You can run a survey to your existing customers, ask your customers directly for a phone interview to learn more about them, peruse forums you know your customers use (Reddit is almost always a good bet), or <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/competitor-analysis\/\">conduct a competitive analysis<\/a> to see what your competitors are\u00a0doing.<\/p>\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say I sell high-end water bottles. I know one of my competitors is Hydro Flask. That gives me some information on how to improve my product.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image6-7.png\" alt=\"Using product reviews to find issues with competitors' products\" class=\"wp-image-159967\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image6-7.png 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image6-7-680x204.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image6-7-768x230.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image6-7-1536x460.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"\/><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1999\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image6-7.png\" alt=\"Using product reviews to find issues with competitors' products\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-159967\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image6-7.png 1999w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image6-7-680x204.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image6-7-768x230.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image6-7-1536x460.png 1536w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>There are also lots of comments mentioning using the bottles for commutes and for the gym, and that helps me improve my picture of the kinds of customers looking for these types of bottles.<\/p>\n<p>But the most important question is this: How did Hydro Flask\u2019s customers find\u00a0it?<\/p>\n<p>The reviews give a few hints, showing some of its customers bought the product from Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods. However, this doesn\u2019t tell me where I should market my own products.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at its website, I can see it has an email newsletter and is active on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1392\" height=\"784\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image4-10.png\" alt=\"Hydro Flask's social media channels\" class=\"wp-image-159968\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image4-10.png 1392w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image4-10-680x383.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image4-10-768x433.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1392px) 100vw, 1392px\"\/><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1392\" height=\"784\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image4-10.png\" alt=\"Hydro Flask's social media channels\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-159968\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image4-10.png 1392w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image4-10-680x383.png 680w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image4-10-768x433.png 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1392px) 100vw, 1392px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Its best channel seems to be Instagram, with over 600,000 followers. Additionally, it uses brand ambassadors to help promote the products. However, it doesn\u2019t seem to have a blog\u2014which, in my opinion, is a big missed opportunity for\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, \u201cspy\u201d on some of your competitors to see which channels they\u2019re using and how they\u2019re using them to inform your own strategy.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Choose your channels<\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019re now ready to decide which channels to prioritize.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Social media is obvious. You can just have a channel on every major platform (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and automate posting across channels with a tool like Buffer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But not all businesses need all channels. You need to decide if creating videos for TikTok and YouTube is worth your time, as these channels take much more effort.<\/p>\n<p>Also, not every business is suited to have a LinkedIn or Pinterest account. Is your audience using these platforms? If not, they may be worth skipping.<\/p>\n<p>Your other <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/marketing-channels\/\">marketing channel options<\/a> include:<\/p>\n<p>In other words, you\u2019ve got options. Lots of options. Which should you choose?<\/p>\n<p>Well, that depends on what you discovered in the last step. Where is your audience? Do they listen to podcasts? If so, which ones? And what are they searching for on Google? These are questions you need to know the answers to. Go back to the last step if you don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>In general, your best bet is to make an account on all the major social media platforms, have a basic email newsletter opt-in on your website, and write blog posts for\u00a0SEO.<\/p>\n<p>If you aren\u2019t sure where to start, consider plugging competitors\u2019 sites into Ahrefs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Site Explorer<\/a> to see what keywords they\u2019re getting traffic from on Google.<\/p>\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say you sell rooftop tents. One of your competitors will be Off Road Tents. Use software to stay organized<\/h3>\n<p>Remember how I mentioned one of the drawbacks of a multi-channel approach is how complex and difficult it can be to stay organized and consistent?<\/p>\n<p>Software can help with\u00a0that.<\/p>\n<p>At Ahrefs, we use <a href=\"https:\/\/basecamp.com\/\">Basecamp<\/a> to track our marketing efforts, keep our writers on the same page, build styling guidelines, and generally stay organized.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It does have a bit of a learning curve compared to other task management software like <a href=\"https:\/\/asana.com\/\">Asana<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/\">Trello<\/a>, but it is much more capable. It\u2019s up to you which you prefer to\u00a0use.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Frank also has many excellent guides that show how to use Notion for content creation, planning, and publishing.
