I removed content from two of our pages to try to measure the impact that content has on rankings. We lost a few positions for many terms, and it hurt, but it wasn\u2019t as bad as I expected. These pages still ranked relatively well without any content.<\/p>\n

You can see the current content for these pages on the blog (top Bing searches<\/a>, top YouTube searches<\/a>). Both have 1-2K words and tons of\u00a0data.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how they looked during the\u00a0test:\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve been reading our blog, you may have seen my first attempt at measuring the impact of content. I blocked the same pages from being crawled<\/a> with robots.txt<\/a>, thinking this would take the content out of the ranking equation. The impact was minor enough that I wasn\u2019t sure if my test was actually successful. <\/p>\n

My theory, based on a comment from Google Search Advocate John Mueller<\/a>, was that they may still be using the old content to rank the page. Here\u2019s what he\u00a0said:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Not really. If we know a text used to be on a page, we might continue to show the page even if the text has been removed. For example, if a company changes its name, you\u2019d still want to find the website if you searched for the old\u00a0name.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think I can rule that out with this test either. The impact feels too small. It\u2019s possible they\u2019re still using the content that used to be on the page to rank it, or they may just be ranking because of the links to the\u00a0page.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Either way, here\u2019s what I did and what happened.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Test setup<\/h2>\n

This was a pretty simple setup. I simply deleted the content of the posts in WordPress and republished them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I deleted the content from these two posts on August 8th and restored it on August 20th:<\/p>\n

Traffic dropped when I removed the content and recovered after I restored it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
