It prioritizes a person\u2019s entire experience from initial search through to conversion.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you sell laser cutters, it\u2019s about helping potential customers through the process of:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Figuring out what they want to\u00a0make<\/li>\n<li>Sourcing the right materials<\/li>\n<li>Showing them <em>exactly<\/em> how to make these things<\/li>\n<li>Recommending products for different budgets or use\u00a0cases<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It\u2019s also about doing the above in forums, on YouTube, and anywhere else they look for information, on and off your website. If you don\u2019t show up where they are searching, you miss many opportunities to connect with potential customers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"big\">\n<p> The goal of SXO is to create an integrated experience from search to interaction. It focuses on the micro level and is considered on a keyword-by-keyword basis.<\/p>\n<p>For example, someone searching for \u201cbuy laser cutter\u201d would have a transactional intent as they\u2019re ready to spend some cash. Someone searching for \u201claser cutter projects\u201d has an informational intent.<\/p>\n<p>In UX, the concept of a lens applies to the entire journey and is about the macro level. The more keywords you look at, the more you\u2019ll get a feel for the macro-level and <em>why<\/em> these people are searching to begin with. Figure out exactly what people are looking for<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>When you understand that the main drive is \u201cto make cool stuff\u201d, or whatever the equivalent lens is for your industry, you open up a broader understanding of the search journeys people go through before they\u2019re ready to\u00a0buy.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, before I bought the laser cutter, I searched 195 different keywords on Google and countless more on platforms like Amazon, Etsy, and even specific e-commerce stores. If you do a good job showing up on all the platforms mentioned above, chances are high you\u2019ll also show up within AI-powered tools and chatbots.<\/p>\n<p>Think about what data they\u2019re trained on.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, Bing\u2019s search index powers ChatGPT. Google has partnered with Reddit to train its AI models.<\/p>\n<p>So, to show up in the responses of AI-powered answer engines, you need to first show up in the platforms they use to fill their knowledge bases.<\/p>\n<p>I also really like Wil Reynold\u2019s take on this. This will help you identify content gaps you can fill and untapped opportunities to increase your brand\u2019s visibility.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, we\u2019re going to borrow the UX concept of journey mapping. We\u2019ll look at the pre-funnel journey and what platforms searchers visit to get the information they\u2019re seeking.<\/p>\n<p>The point isn\u2019t to map the exact steps in a linear format because that\u2019s nearly impossible these\u00a0days.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"big\">\n<p> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Search journeys are too complex now to really give attribution accurately. Attribution gets even more difficult for things like \u201cthe start of a search journey.\u201d There\u2019s too much info out there. Things aren\u2019t linear. We\u2019re bombarded with ads and social content without realizing it. For each platform, assess how easy it is for Jane to find what she wants. Pay attention to the possible emotional experiences that will influence her next\u00a0steps.<\/p>\n<p>Then, map the experience for each platform.
