{"id":2943,"date":"2025-05-26T09:41:41","date_gmt":"2025-05-26T09:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ewebtoolz.com\/blog\/what-75000-brands-taught-us-about-getting-mentioned-in-ai-overviews\/"},"modified":"2025-05-26T09:41:41","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T09:41:41","slug":"what-75000-brands-taught-us-about-getting-mentioned-in-ai-overviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ewebtoolz.com\/blog\/what-75000-brands-taught-us-about-getting-mentioned-in-ai-overviews\/","title":{"rendered":"What 75,000 Brands Taught Us About Getting Mentioned in AI Overviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<div class=\"intro-txt\">With Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UG-8YsHnvt4\">AI mode developments<\/a>, we\u2019re heading toward a future where search results could eventually roll up into one big AI Overview.<\/div>\n<p>Soon it won\u2019t be a case of \u201cShould I, or shouldn\u2019t I optimize for AI Overviews?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you want <em>any<\/em> chance of search visibility, you\u2019ll need to understand how to rank in Google\u2019s AI results.<\/p>\n<p>With this new reality in mind, we\u2019ve analyzed 75,000 brands to see which search factors are most likely to influence brand mentions in AI Overviews.<\/p>\n<p>As ever, I\u2019d like to say a huge thanks to our awesome data scientist Xibeijia Guan for pulling the data together for this\u00a0study.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s get into\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p>The objective of this study was to find out which search factors correspond with higher brand visibility in AI Overviews.<\/p>\n<p>We used the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spearman%27s_rank_correlation_coefficient\">Spearman correlation coefficient<\/a> to analyze the data in this study\u2013larger positive values reflect stronger positive correlations.<a id=\"post-188081-_u4t9pbwt1nk0\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-188089 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1-brand-factor-correlation-study.png\" alt=\"Factors that correlate with brand appearance in AI overviews. Branded web mentions (0.664), Branded anchors (0.527), Branded search volume (0.392), DR (0.326), # of ref domains (0.295), Branded traffic (0.274), Number of backlinks (0.218), Ad traffic (0.216), Ad cost (0.215), URL rating (0.18), Number of site pages (0.17)\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1769\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1-brand-factor-correlation-study.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1-brand-factor-correlation-study-384x425.png 384w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1-brand-factor-correlation-study-768x849.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1-brand-factor-correlation-study-1389x1536.png 1389w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Brand web mentions<\/strong> show the strongest correlation (0.664) with AI Overview brand visibility.<\/li>\n<li>Web mentions (0.664) correlate <strong>much more strongly than backlinks<\/strong> (0.218).<\/li>\n<li>The top 3 correlations are all <strong>off-site factors<\/strong>: brand web mentions (0.664), brand anchors (0.527), and brand search volume (0.392).<\/li>\n<li>Paid factors like branded ad traffic (0.216) and branded ad cost (0.215) show <strong>weak positive correlations<\/strong> with AI mentions.<\/li>\n<li>Brands earning the most web mentions earn up to <strong>10X more mentions<\/strong> in AI Overviews vs. the next closest quartile.<\/li>\n<li><strong>26% of brands have zero mentions<\/strong> in AI Overviews.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While the data shows statistical relationships, I should emphasize that <strong>correlation \u2260 causation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All the factors we studied revealed moderate to very weak correlations on the Spearman scale, but that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean they should be overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>These signals, and tons of others, all combine to influence your brand\u2019s visibility in AI search.<\/p>\n<p>In this study, we set out to research \u201cdomain\u201d factors and \u201ckeyword\u201d factors, and see how they correlated with visibility in AI Overviews.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cdomain\u201d factors included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Domain Rating (DR)<\/li>\n<li># of referring domains<\/li>\n<li># of backlinks<\/li>\n<li>Ad traffic<\/li>\n<li>Ad cost<\/li>\n<li>URL rating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All \u201cdomain\u201d factors corresponded to the brand\u2019s domain. This was based on data extracted from <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\">Ahrefs Site Explorer<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.ahrefs.com\/docs\/api\/reference\/introduction\">Ahrefs API<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ckeyword\u201d factors included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Branded web mentions (mentions of the brand name anywhere across the\u00a0web)<\/li>\n<li>Branded anchors (mentions of the brand name in hyperlinked text)<\/li>\n<li>Branded search volume (monthly search volume attached to the brand\u00a0name)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All \u201ckeyword\u201d factors corresponded to the domain\u2019s #1 ranking keyword.<\/p>\n<p>We filtered for domains with DR &gt; 40 and took their highest volume keyword with a monthly search volume of at least\u00a0800.<\/p>\n<p>Though not a perfect calculus, it worked pretty well in helping us find legitimate brands.<\/p>\n<p>Following that, we analyzed millions of AI Overview responses to find mentions of those brands, using <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/brand-radar\">Ahrefs Brand\u00a0Radar<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Roughly 26% had zero mentions\u2013we studied the remaining ~74%.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-nav-link clearfix\" id=\"section1\"><a class=\"subhead-anchor\" data-tip=\"tooltip__copielink\" rel=\"#section1\"><svg width=\"19\" height=\"19\" viewbox=\"0 0 14 14\" style=\"\"><g fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\"><path d=\"M0 0h14v14H0z\"\/><path d=\"M7.45 9.887l-1.62 1.621c-.92.92-2.418.92-3.338 0a2.364 2.364 0 0 1 0-3.339l1.62-1.62-1.273-1.272-1.62 1.62a4.161 4.161 0 1 0 5.885 5.884l1.62-1.62L7.45 9.886zM5.527 5.135L7.17 3.492c.92-.92 2.418-.92 3.339 0 .92.92.92 2.418 0 3.339L8.866 8.473l1.272 1.273 1.644-1.643A4.161 4.161 0 1 0 5.897 2.22L4.254 3.863l1.272 1.272zm-.66 3.998a.749.749 0 0 1 0-1.06l2.208-2.206a.749.749 0 1 1 1.06 1.06L5.928 9.133a.75.75 0 0 1-1.061 0z\" style=\"\"\/><\/g><\/svg><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"link-text\" data-anchor=\"1. Your brand\u2019s web presence is everything<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The strongest correlations with AI Overview mentions are all <strong>off-site factors<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Branded web mentions (0.664)<\/li>\n<li>Branded anchors (0.527)<\/li>\n<li>Branded search volume (0.392)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This aligns with what we\u2019re seeing across the industry: AI visibility isn\u2019t just about your website\u2014it\u2019s about how widely your brand shows up across the\u00a0web.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kevinindig\/\">Kevin Indig<\/a> found in his recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.growth-memo.com\/p\/what-content-works-well-in-llms\">AI visibility research<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"small\">\n<p>Brand search volume is the biggest predictor for visibility in ChatGPT\u2026 The number of AI Chatbot mentions and brand search volume have a correlation of .334 &#8211; pretty good in this\u00a0field.<\/p>\n<div class=\"quote-info clearfix\">\n<div class=\"quote-photo\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kevin Indig\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Kevin-Indig.jpeg\"\/><\/noscript><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kevin Indig\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Kevin-Indig.jpeg\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Our correlation of 0.392 for branded search volume closely supports Kevin\u2019s findings\u2014but we\u2019ve uncovered even stronger signals.<\/p>\n<p>Branded web mentions\u2013linked or unliked\u2013show the highest correlation with brand presence in AI Overviews.<\/p>\n<p>As our Content Marketing Director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/thinkingslow\/\">Ryan Law<\/a>, noted in his article <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/geo-is-just-seo\/\">GEO, LLMO, AEO\u2026 It\u2019s All Just SEO<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"small\">\n<p>Unlinked mentions\u2014text written about your brand on other websites\u2014have very little impact on SEO, but a much bigger impact on GEO\u2026 LLMs derive their understanding of a brand\u2019s authority from words on the page, from the prevalence of particular words, the co-occurrence of different terms and topics, and the context in which those words are\u00a0used.<\/p>\n<div class=\"quote-info clearfix\">\n<div class=\"quote-photo\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ryan Law\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ryan-law.jpeg\"\/><\/noscript><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ryan Law\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ryan-law.jpeg\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Another major thing to note is that all three of these factors represent \u201ckeyword\u201d factors in our\u00a0study.<\/p>\n<p>Large Language Models (LLMs) are predictive language models. Ads won\u2019t save you if you want AI Overview visibility\" data-section=\"four\">\n<h2>4. <a id=\"post-188081-_9vfas3ddytfa\"\/>Ads won\u2019t save you if you want AI Overview visibility<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>We saw relatively weak correlations between paid efforts and AI mentions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Branded ad traffic (0.216)<\/li>\n<li>Branded ad cost (0.215)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It seems that throwing money at paid search won\u2019t necessarily boost your brand\u2019s AI Overview visibility.<\/p>\n<p>Google does <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/ads-commerce\/google-lens-ai-overviews-ads-marketers\/\">feature ads in AI Overviews<\/a>, but our <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/insights-from-56-million-ai-overviews\/#AIOs-non-monetized-searches\">latest research<\/a> shows these features aren\u2019t widely monetized yet. As Patrick Stox noted in his analysis:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"small\">\n<p>What\u2019s more interesting is that 71.67% of the searches with AIOs had no CPC data. This indicates a majority of the AIO searches weren\u2019t monetized at all. It\u2019s no wonder no one has seen ads in AIOs yet. Move beyond \u201cclick here\u201d links and make sure publications are linking to you with your brand name in the anchor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drive branded search volume<\/strong>: The third strongest factor (0.392) suggests you should invest in campaigns that get people actively searching for your brand\u00a0name.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mind the visibility cliff<\/strong>: If you\u2019re in the bottom 50% of web mentions, you\u2019re essentially invisible to AI.
