CVR (going by our new <a href=\"https:\/\/help.ahrefs.com\/en\/articles\/11381932-tracked-events-in-ahrefs-web-analytics\">custom event tracking<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/web-analytics\">Web Analytics<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"876\" class=\"wp-image-189253\" experiencing any AI traffic growth\u2013especially now that <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/zero-click-search\/\">zero-click search<\/a> has taken\u00a0hold.<\/p>\n<p>We decided to update the findings of our March <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-traffic-research\/\">AI traffic research<\/a> while we were at\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p>With the help of <a href=\"https:\/\/sg.linkedin.com\/in\/xibeijia-guan\">Xibeijia<\/a>, Ahrefs\u2019 awesome data scientist, we\u2019ve analyzed 81,947 sites (up from ~35K sites in March), to understand more about AI last\u00a0year<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Over the past year, the average site\u2019s search traffic has dropped by about 21%, while its AI traffic has grown roughly href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-overviews-reduce-clicks\/\">CTR research<\/a>, that search traffic decline is likely the work of AI Overviews and AI\u00a0Mode.<\/p>\n<p>AIO\/AIM traffic currently gets tracked as \u201cSearch\u201d traffic in site analytics tools.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-search-traffic-by-page-type-ahrefs\/\">In the words of Patrick Stox<\/a>, these features are not \u201cbroken out in a way that can be reliably tracked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, we can\u2019t yet filter between \u201ctraditional search\u201d and \u201cAI search\u201d.\u00a0So, while we have compared \u201csearch traffic\u201d and \u201dAI traffic\u201d in this study, some of that \u201csearch traffic\u201d will technically be driven by AI features.<\/p>\n<p>Despite what we\u2019ve seen in Ahrefs data, average AI traffic doesn\u2019t seem to have grown much over the last few months. We saw a peak in April, but May and June figures dipped again.<\/p>\n<p>AI traffic now represents<strong> 0.25% of a site\u2019s total traffic<\/strong>, on average. It\u2019s still a drop in the ocean, but as we\u2019ve acknowledged before, it\u2019s likely <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-traffic-study\/#underestimating-ai-traffic\">AI referral traffic is at least somewhat underestimated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-nav-link clearfix\" id=\"section1\"><a class=\"subhead-anchor\" data-tip=\"tooltip__copielink\" rel=\"#section1\"><svg width=\"19\" sends more traffic than Reddit<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Google is still the top referral source for all sites in our study, accounting for 39.35% of all referral traffic\u2013though this is down slightly from <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-traffic-research\/\">our last study<\/a> (-1.79 percentage points).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sidenote\">\n<p>Sidenote.<\/p>\n<p> Bear in mind that this more traffic than the \u201cBig three\u201d AI platforms\u2013though the gap has narrowed since March, when Google sent 345x more traffic.<\/p>\n<p>But what immediately jumped out at me from this latest data capture was ChatGPT\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n<p>In our previous study, Reddit was out-referring all three major AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini) combined.<\/p>\n<p>Now, ChatGPT alone sends out marginally more traffic than Reddit (+0.05%) and LinkedIn (+0.06%).<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-189263\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/5-llm-traffic-study.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1661\" Reddit and LinkedIn are famously zero-click platforms, designed to disincentivize off-site visits. But it shows clear growth, nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>And it doesn\u2019t end\u00a0there,<\/p>\n<p>ChatGPT has driven AI traffic growth almost single-handedly, growing 85% since status as the top AI referrer\u2013sending &gt;80% of AI traffic\u2013up ~30% since our last\u00a0study.<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-189265\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cbig three\u201d AI traffic referrers have also changed since we last looked\u2013Copilot is back in business following a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/ai-traffic-study\/#underestimating-ai-traffic\">referral outage<\/a>, and now sends on more AI traffic than Gemini.<\/p>\n<p>In all, this new trio refer 0.19% of a site\u2019s total traffic on average (up from 0.12% in\u00a0March).<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-189252-_b739vs5qcwmv\"\/>Wrapping up<\/h2>\n<p>AI traffic is still marginal\u2013nothing has changed there\u2013but the makeup of that traffic is shifting, and we\u2019ve witnessed some moderate growth.<\/p>\n<p>While it has levelled out for now, I\u2019m confident there\u2019s still more to\u00a0come.<\/p>\n<p>As search clicks decline, AI clicks are on the up\u2013but as I\u2019ve said before, AI is never going to be a significant source of traffic for most\u00a0sites.<\/p>\n<p>And there isn\u2019t a world where AI traffic will replace the traffic we\u2019ve enjoyed from search.<\/p>\n<p>The MO of any AI platform is to answer a user\u2019s questions natively, after\u00a0all.<\/p>\n<p>So, overlook search at your\u00a0peril\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In the words of Glenn\u00a0Gabe:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"small\">\n<p>\u201cI think site owners run the risk of missing the forest for the trees by heavily focusing on AI search right now and ignoring Google Search\u2026the fact of the matter is that Google still drives the most traffic to sites by a\u00a0mile.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"quote-info clearfix\">\n<div class=\"quote-photo\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Glenn Gabe\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/glenn-gabe.jpeg\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, AI is not just about traffic\u2013it drives brand awareness, and can hand over more informed users.<\/p>\n<p>But we all need to weigh AI\u2019s value to us, individually, and be strategic about how we allocate our resources to\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p>If you choose to actively pursue AI traffic, our data shows that ChatGPT is <em>the<\/em> platform to focus\u00a0on.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve only just released conversion tracking in Ahrefs Web Analytics, but as soon as we have enough data, I\u2019m hoping to dig into AI conversions.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, we\u2019ll keep tracking the trends and sharing what
