search engine indexes to enrich their static training data in a process known as retrieval augmented generation (RAG), so some crossover between AI and search results is to be expected.<\/p>\n<p>But how much does your visibility in search align with your presence in\u00a0AI?<\/p>\n<p>With the help of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/xibeijia-guan\/\">Xibeijia Guan<\/a>, I was able to study 1.9M citations from 1M AI Overviews to find out\u2014analyzing the top 3 most visible citations in each response.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" the\u00a0study<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>We discovered that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>76.10% of AI Overview-cited pages rank in the <strong>top 10 <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>9.50% of AI Overview-cited pages rank between position <strong>11-100<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>14.40% of pages cited in AI Overviews <strong>do not<\/strong> rank in the SERPs (i.e. rank below position 100)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><noscript><img crossover between traditional search rankings and AI Overview citations.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to visibility in AI responses\u2014I\u2019m talking those coveted top three links\u2014traditional search presence appears to play a significant part.<\/p>\n<p>Of the citations included in AI Overviews, 86% come from pages that can be found somewhere in the top 100 of Google\u2014either in the top does AI-cited content rank?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The three URLs cited in AI Overview responses show a median ranking of 3 in the\u00a0SERPs.<\/p>\n<p>The primary (top-cited) URL tends to position a shave higher than that, earning a median ranking of position 2 in traditional search.<\/p>\n<p><strong><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-189935\" This reveals the fan-out queries ChatGPT generates when processing responses to prompts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>We\u2019d seen theories circulating that some lower ranking pages get cited because they better answer AI\u2019s synthetic fan-out queries. We set out to test\u00a0that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we\u00a0found:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We expected that if lower ranking content was cited during the query fan out process, it would return for more detailed (read: <em>longer<\/em>) queries, and for lots of synonymous (read: <em>more<\/em>) keywords\u2014given the long-tail nature of fan out questions.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, we found that pages cited beyond the top 10 actually had <em>fewer<\/em> keywords, and returned for <em>shorter<\/em> queries.<\/p>\n<table id=\"tablepress-443\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-443 tablepress-responsive tablepress-ahrefs-width-720px\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1 odd\">\n<th class=\"column-1\">Average<\/th>\n<th class=\"column-2\">Ranks in top 10<\/th>\n<th class=\"column-3\">Ranks position 11\u2013100<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-2 even\">\n<td class=\"column-1\"># of keywords<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">1020<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-3\">887<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3 odd\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">length of keywords<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">5.4<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-3\">5.2<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-4 even\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">length of \u201ctop keyword\u201d<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">8.5<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-3\">7.7<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t neatly fit with our expected profile of fan-out query content.<\/p>\n<p>Content is cited in AI for a growing number of complex reasons, from its freshness to its alignment with specific user preferences\u2014and even past prompts.<\/p>\n<p>The ~10% of results that \u201crank beyond the top 10\u201d likely represent a culmination of all of these factors.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-189932-_2qvpuxqdrso9\"\/>Wrapping up<\/h2>\n<p>While 14% of AI-cited content doesn\u2019t rank in the top 100, this seems to be the exception rather than the\u00a0rule.<\/p>\n<p>AI Overview visibility and search visibility is closely linked.<\/p>\n<p>Meaning that, when you show up in search, you have a greater chance of also being cited in Google\u2019s AI results.<\/p>\n<p>Monitor both your traditional rankings and AI citation performance to get the complete picture of your search visibility.<\/p>\n<p>You can do this with Ahrefs.
