Traffic is low but moving in the right direction.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Growth<\/strong>: Rankings climb, organic traffic builds, and the article starts pulling in a consistent stream of visitors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Traffic peak<\/strong>: The article reaches its highest point of visibility and clicks, typically when it\u2019s ranking in top positions for its target keywords.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slow plateau<\/strong>: Traffic looks stable on the surface, but rankings are quietly slipping. Our own research shows that URLs cited by AI assistants are <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/do-ai-assistants-prefer-to-cite-fresh-content\/\">25.7% \u201cfresher\u201d<\/a> than organic SERP results on average.<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1648\" class=\"wp-image-195964\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bar-chart-compares-average-age-of-cited-content-o.png\" alt=\"Bar chart compares average age of cited content (Organic SERP vs. AI assistants) in days since publication and last updated.\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bar-chart-compares-average-age-of-cited-content-o.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bar-chart-compares-average-age-of-cited-content-o-413x425.png 413w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bar-chart-compares-average-age-of-cited-content-o-768x791.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bar-chart-compares-average-age-of-cited-content-o-1491x1536.png 1491w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"\/><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1648\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-195964\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bar-chart-compares-average-age-of-cited-content-o.png\" alt=\"Bar chart compares average age of cited content (Organic SERP vs. AI assistants) in days since publication and last updated.\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bar-chart-compares-average-age-of-cited-content-o.png 1600w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bar-chart-compares-average-age-of-cited-content-o-413x425.png 413w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bar-chart-compares-average-age-of-cited-content-o-768x791.png 768w, https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bar-chart-compares-average-age-of-cited-content-o-1491x1536.png 1491w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>And AI expert <a href=\"https:\/\/tr.linkedin.com\/in\/metehanyesilyurt\">Metehan Ye\u015filyurt<\/a> identified a <code>URL_freshness_score<\/code> within ChatGPT\u2019s configuration files that suggests it favors newer content.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/metehan.ai\/blog\/i-found-it-in-the-code-science-proved-it-in-the-lab-the-recency-bias-thats-reshaping-ai-search\/\">his research<\/a>, he discovered studies showing that artificially refreshing publication dates can improve AI ranking positions by as much as <strong>95 places<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All of this is to say that AI is even more biased toward recency than traditional Google.<\/p>\n<h3>Competitor improvement<\/h3>\n<p>Your content can decay if someone publishes a better article targeting the same keywords.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it earns more links, or matches intent more precisely, and over the course of the year it displaces yours.<\/p>\n<p>This is the most common cause of content decay, and it\u2019s the hardest to notice because the displacement happens so gradually.<\/p>\n<h3>Search intent shift<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/search-intent\/\">Search intent<\/a> for a keyword can drift meaningfully over years, even if the keyword itself doesn\u2019t change.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, \u201cLLM\u201d used to mean \u201cMaster of Laws\u201d but by 2024, \u201clarge language model\u201d content dominated.<\/p>\n<p>You can spot <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/search-intent-shift\/\">search intent shifts<\/a> in Ahrefs\u2019 SERP Overview tool\u2014look for lots of \u201cLost\u201d and \u201cNew\u201d rankings, plus a low SERP similarity score.<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"743\" height=\"587\" class=\"wp-image-195965\" src=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/screenshot-comparing-serp-results-for-llm-betwee.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot comparing SERP results for &quot;llm&quot;
